Had an up and down three days on the winter festival at Tunnel Barn. First day I could not have drawn much worse with peg 26 on Top Pool. Been on this peg countless times over the years and never really done much good off it. It was a strange, wet and miserable day and I only caught short on maggots. My long pole swim was useless and I only caught the last hour down the edge. Very surprising as it\u2019s 3ft+ down the side and they\u2019re normally there from the off!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt I did OK to catch 71lb of smallish F1s, but the other end where the big beds of lilies are (end pegs 15 and 20) threw up a 90lb and a 104lb. I never felt that was achievable on the day, so not a great start. My peg was taken out the next two days to rub salt into the wounds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second day I\u2019ve had a much better time on out-and-out flyer 15 on a windswept High Pool. Always a pressure peg this, especially as nothing much came off it the day before. I had an amazing start short on pellets, catching three good carp and a couple of big F1s. When that died I pushed right out to the left-hand island. Battling a really awkward wind I managed a couple of fish on pellets, but it just never seemed right. Swapping to maggots yielded a 1lb perch and not a lot else. Dropping back short on maggots I was catching nice big F1s. Some iffy bites, but enough hooked fish to keep me interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mid-match I went 16m to the right-hand island and had several big carp and a couple of F1s here, again on pellets, then maggots. Probably should have gone there a lot sooner, but the swirling wind was really bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stayed on my short maggot lines the last hour. It wasn\u2019t fast but I ticked over. My 94lb was more than enough for a comfortable section win. A really nice day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3 I wasn\u2019t in contention to frame, so just wanted a nice peg I could fish positively. I got that in the shape of peg 5 on Extension. No complaints at all as I\u2019ve won a lot of money off this peg over the years! I just hoped the fish hadn\u2019t got toothache after five straight days of pressure…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well 20 minutes in I hadn\u2019t got anything in my net, which totally shocked me! My first fish was a skimmer out at 11m and the second was a little stockie mirror carp. Not a good sign at all for an F1 venue! I\u2019ve eventually put a few fish together and started to force things to see if I could catch shallow. I managed three big F1s, but that pretty much killed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I really thought rotating a few short maggot swims would be the boss tactic, but it took forever to finally catch close. When they eventually arrived down the edge they were small F1s or those stockie mirrors again. All of this really caught me out, to be honest, and with hardly any decent F1s feeding I felt I need to get some big carp into the peg. Not sure if it was angling pressure or air pressure, but it was such a strange and moody day with my float not moving a great deal. Starting up new swims never really worked either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My 71lb beat a couple in the section for a disappointing day. Miles behind Jamie Hughes who had a blistering last two hours down his edges to comfortably win the lake with 120lb. I must also say a big well done to \u2018captain\u2019 Jack Danby for winning overall with three impressive performances. Top two in the match all three days is no mean feat, so he\u2019s a very deserving champ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So not my best ever three days at the Barn, but I never really went into this event with much drive this year. It was still very nice to be back doing a bit of maggot fishing, though. I must say that the venue still fished great overall for October and it was an impeccably well run event by all those involved. Will have to pull my finger out if I fish it next year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
