A Wintery Weekend

Teams-of-four duties again on Saturday at Tunnel Barn. Our draw was very mediocre apart from a good peg on Top Pool. I drew 28 on New Pool, which has acres of room as the next pegs are 31 and 24. Unfortunately, having space in winter is not always a good thing as the fish just back off into the gaps. It was also flat calm, clear water and really high pressure with the low winter sun dazzling us all, so you needed a bit of cover to catch.

After dobbing a couple of quick fish I’ve struggled for bites most of the day until the last 40 minutes, when I’ve had a run of F1s fishing 16m to my right. Not had a bite shorter than 14.5m all day other than a lone skimmer.

My 22lb only beat three in the section with peg 10 winning the lake with 57lb I think. Another 7lb could’ve got me 4th, though, so it’s always a case of ifs, buts and maybes…

The team had a very average day, so not the best of results but it’s fished extremely patchy – as you’d expect after all that ice had melted! A really pleasant day weatherise, just not great for catching fish!

Sunday I really couldn’t face struggling on a commercial, so I just popped to the canal for a few hours. After a slow start with tiny fish I ended up snaring two big perch up to 2lb and a great big hybrid before packing away.

Sometimes it’s just nice to have a no-pressure session on the cut. Especially when you never quite know what the next fish will be…
