Nice Time At Weston Pools

No fishing this weekend as I’ve spent the last three days at the fabulous Weston Pools.

When White Acres cancelled their Spring festivals I searched for other places to fish and the two-day Autumn Festival at Weston sounded great. So I booked myself into one of their famous Hobbit Holes for digs (I got the pink one!) and made the long journey to deepest Shropshire. This would be only my fourth and fifth matches at the venue, although I’ve also shot several nice features there when I was on the magazines.

The day before the festival I spent a few hours pleasure fishing on Jacks Pool and did an enjoyable Facebook Live for Matrix while catching plenty. This is just my kind of lake as you don’t know what the next species will be. Oh, and I disappeared for two minutes only to return and find cameraman Adam Firth fishing for squirrels with my shallow rig!

On to the matches and on Day One I drew a decent peg in the shape of 17 on Clay Pit. I’d love to say I dd well, but after being probably the first angler on the lake to catch a carp I came stone cold last in section! This lake’s very different to most venues and I got the tactics all wrong, targeted the wrong depths and fed too much bait. Doh!

All to make up for on Day Two. I drew peg 24 on Stretton, which is a lake I’ve never fished before. It didn’t sound like I was in the best area, but I ended up having a lovely day’s fishing, despite a bit of Autumn leaf tourettes! The water was really clear so I treated it like a winter maggot session, catching some nice F1s, a few ide, three skimmers, two crucians and three carp for 62lb 8oz. That was enough to win the section and come 3rd overall on the day. It more than made up for the previous day’s calamity, so I drove home happy!

Festival winner Matt Dalton did amazing to win both days outright from peg 22 and 34 on Clay Pit. Andy Hodge was runner up and Andrew Mann was third. Well done all! It’s been refreshing to spend a few days in totally different surroundings and catching some stunning looking and very hard fighting fish. I will definitely be going back for some more!

Oh, and hopefully there’s a Live Match from my day at Stretton to come…
