Lovely Lake View… Despite The Rain!

I was looking forward to visiting Lake View Fishery near Melton Mowbray for my latest coaching session. I only get to fish this place once or twice a year, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the place as it’s where I qualified for my first ever Fish’O’Mania Final, many years ago!

I’ve always found Lake View to offer an interesting challenge. It’s not the easiest of places, there’s no shortage of fish, but they can be very spooky and sometimes take a bit of fooling.

Gary has the most confidence fishing with baits like sweetcorn and maggots on the short pole, so today we deliberately kicked off with a pellet attack instead. He got off to a great start with some lively commons and mirrors down the middle before trying the same tactics across to the far bank. The bottom plumbed up unevenly but we eventually located a nice little hole with some shallower water and had another run of fish here, again on hard pellets.

We could have easily carried on catching like this, but I was keen to demonstrate a few other tactics. A switch to potting in Dynamite Milled Expander and dead maggots across brought our biggest fish of the day, plus a couple of surprise barbel.

By now the rain was well and truly upon us and the wind was also picking up, so it was definitely time to go down the margins. Fishing maggots and groundbait down one side and pellets and corn down the other saw Gary end the session with a nice flurry of quality fish.

A wet day but also a really nice one in great company. Many thanks to Lake View Fishery for having us!
